Space City Ski & Adventure Club

THANK YOU FOR VISITING OUR NEW WEBSITE
MEMBERS, REMEMBER TO LOGIN !!!

We are a non-profit, member run, Sports and Adventure Club operating in Houston, Texas for 50+ years.  We offer 8 - 12 winter and summer trips per year, all over the world.

Our social, sports, cultural, and charitable events fill the calendar year-round. From September to May we have fun monthly general meetings normally held the 2nd Monday of the month.  Happy Hours are the 4th Thursday of each month, year-round.

Popular local Houston Area activities this year were monthly dinner gatherings, theater outings, bike rides and winery/brewery tours.  Activities are run by volunteers, if there is something you are interested in doing, make a suggestion and we will consider offering it.

Initial trip sales generally start in August and sell briskly, so act quickly to avoid landing on a wait-list.  Trip participation requires membership but it is only $40 for an Individual for an entire season.  Have a look around and we hope you decide to Join Us.  If you need some more time to decide, Click "Add Me to your Mailing List" (Top Left Corner)

THE SCSC 2023-24 TRIP SCHEDULE: RITA CARDENAS VP-TRIPS

When should I book my air!
By Rita Cardenas, VP Trips

What is going on with airfares?  A question that I keep asking?  According to the International Air Transport Association, states that average ticket prices across all regions are not expected to change significantly. In the United States, domestic and international airfares are expected to move in opposite directions.
Hayley Berg, lead economist for the booking platform Hopper, anticipates that for the next six months, domestic airfare will cost less than in 2023 and pre-pandemic years.  Reasons for the falling prices include increased airplane capacity, the number of seats on a given route and a drop in the cost of jet fuel.
January is usually the cheapest month of the year to book travel until the fall shoulder season in September and October.  International airfare departing from the United States is up 10 percent for 2024 compared with 2023, according to Kayak, a travel search engine. But airline capacity is rising and might eventually dampen that increase in prices.
Existing airlines are offering more flights and routes, 2023 was a huge year for travel, with several records broken. The U.S. State Department issued a record 24 million passport books and cards during the 2023 fiscal year, signaling increased interest in travel abroad.  Airlines added 10% more flights between the U.S. and Central America in 2023 versus 2022, according to scheduling data analyzed by Going from aviation analytics company Cirium Diio. In 2024, airlines are expected to add another 10%.
Last year’s high traveler volume has prompted airlines to increase flight schedules to other parts of the world. For example, Delta Air Lines announced that, it would launch its largest-ever transatlantic schedule for summer 2024. That includes new daily service from New York to Naples, Italy, beginning in May, as well as more flights from the U.S. to Paris; Venice, Italy; Barcelona, Spain; and Dublin. For travel from North America to Asia, there are 5.5 million more airline seats for sale in the first half of 2024 versus the same period in 2023. That’s a 35% year-over-year increase, according to American Express Global Business Travel.   More availability in turn can help with pricing.

So, when should I book my international air?  Don’t delay booking in hopes that prices will fall.  The travel experts advise booking two to eight months out for international travel.  Airfares tend to increase the closer you get to booking, it is far more likely for airlines to sell tickets at higher prices at the last minute.  Global airfares are expected to rise between 3%-7% next year, as airlines grapple with high fuel costs, sustainability changes and fleet upgrades, according to the FCM Consulting’s “Global Trend Report” for the third quarter of 2023.

I hope my research sheds some light on your decision as to when to book airfare, especially when flying internationally.  Safe travels!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT LYNN BURCH

Greetings SCSC’ers!

Thank everyone for coming to the February and March meetings.  The February meeting at Christie’s was well attended by 54 people and the nominees for the new officers for 2024/2025 year were presented.  There were not any nominations from the floor, so the slate stood to be voted on at the March meeting.  Cindy Moore was the chairman of the nominating committee and she is the one who presented the slate.
The March meeting was phenomenal.  We had 77 people attend, I don’t know if it was due to me saying please attend the meeting because we needed a forum to vote in the new officers, Rita saying she was going to talk about the Japan cruise or everyone really likes Sunday meetings at Christie’s (where the food is really good) but I was amazed at the turnout.  I emphasized that we really need everyone to register for the meetings if they are coming. I have to let Christie’s know how many to set the tables for and to have enough staff to wait on us.  They have done a wonderful job getting that many people served and fed in a short period of time.  Please tell them how much we appreciate their service.
The April meeting will again be at Christie’s and then the May meeting will be at Sun & Ski across the street on Sunday May 5.  We will not meet in June or July.
Now that ski season is almost over, we can look forward to the non- ski trips that are coming up.  Costa Rica, Texas Hill Country Wine Tasting, Galapagos Adventure, and Amalfi Coast & Rome.  There will be all sorts of activities to do here from the Dinners, Happy Hours, parties, ball games and some other things we are working on that will be a lot of fun.  Watch the website and eblasts for details.
We are working on the Volunteer Party for June 8 or 9.  Bruce Lowther and Robert Clements who have cooked the BBQ for the party for years are not going to be able to cook for us this year so we are going to talk to a few other people to see if someone else can bring their pit to cook for the party.  I really thank Robert and Bruce for all they have done for us for a lot of years.  I have put a list of volunteers on the website and the Sitzmarke for everyone to see.  If you volunteered and worked on something for the club and I missed your name, please call me to add your name.  This club is run by volunteers and we want to show our appreciation to them with the party.  Without Volunteers this club would not exist, please help us keep SCSC going by offering to run trips, activities or help out any way you can.  I am so pleased that a few new people are going to help run the club.
The TSC Bid Fest is going to be in Houston this year.  It has been a number of years since it has been here and I want to make sure all the attendees and vendors enjoy themselves and see how great Houston is. I am going to be responsible in putting together the activities and getting volunteers to help with all the little details.  The date is August 2-4 and it will be held at the Sheraton Brookhollow (where this last year’s Gala was held).  If you have never been to a bid meeting, it is where all the ski clubs in Texas and vendors from ski areas and tour groups meet yearly to decide which trips for the members of the council to go on.  The vendors present their bids on places for us to go skiing or touring and we all vote on which trips the TSC clubs would like to go on.  Closer to time the information will be on the website if you want to attend and help out.  It really is a lot of fun and you get to help make the decision on which trips we want to take.
If you have an idea or want to run an activity after May 1, please contact Lynn.  Please sign up for all the activities that are coming up. We all work very hard to come up with ideas and venues so our members can have various activities to enjoy.
Thanks again to everyone and I look forward to seeing and working with you.

Lynn Burch
