Why Choose This Trip?
This is the Texas Ski Council’s Final Showdown and will include: Welcome Party, Apres Ski Party, and Farewell Party dinner. Ski racing is usually offered as an optional activity.
Everyone who goes to Crested Butte loves Crested Butte. Devotees possess a strong “if you know, you know” attitude about the place that suggests it’s Colorado’s best-kept secret—and with good reason. The mountain is a skier’s mountain, known for its relatively uncrowded runs and steep, rugged, challenging terrain. The town is part French Alps and part Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid—triangular roofed-cabins are nestled among western-style false front buildings, restored to their old Western glory.

Founded as a coal mining town in the 1870s, Crested Butte was slow to transform into the winter sports destination that it is today. In the early 1990s, the mountain began hosting extreme skiing competitions—one of the first in America to do so—and its indie ski spirit was born.
Crested Butte was family-owned since 2006, with the tagline “Colorado’s last great ski town,” and in 2018 Vail purchased the resort. Since its acquisition, Vail has been investing money by upgrading ski lifts and adding new snow cats for better grooming.

More Than Just Skiing
Crested Butte is the kind of town that makes visitors wonder: how can I live here? A historic mining town founded in 1880, Crested Butte eventually evolved from a mining town to an idyllic mountain destination, including the opening of Crested Butte Mountain Resort in the early 1960s.
Crested Butte Mountain is a massive pyramid granite that splits the clouds as it pierces the sky. In winter, the ski resort is known for its steep, adventurous terrain where even the best skiers and snowboarders can push their limits. Of course, there are mellow runs ending with hot chocolate and cold beer, too.
The iconic town of Crested Butte is renowned for its funky character and fierce independence alongside its jaw-dropping beauty and vast, wild terrain. There are still no traffic lights in town, and independently owned businesses still outnumber corporations. It is bordered with pastel buildings and nostalgic architecture which reflects the town’s designation as a National Historic District.
There is more than skiing in Crested Butte. The list below lists the Top 10 Things to do in Crested Butte outside skiing in winter.
- Snowshoeing in Crested Butte
- Crested Butte Museum
- See the Colorful Buildings on Elk Avenue
- Crested Butte Winter Adventure Park
