Acadia National Park / Bar Harbor

Our next summer adventure is just around the corner! And what is more appealing than visiting Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island, ME.  Roughly half the island is the Acadia National Park, the first National Park established east of the Mississippi and ranked the most visited in the park system. Bar Harbor is a quaint town situated on the east side of Mount Desert Island.

Why Choose this trip?
Acadia National Park is beautiful!  Mount Desert Island is the 2nd largest island on the eastern seaboard. It’s home to Acadia National Park.  The island boasts 24 mountain peaks, 125 miles of hiking trails, 45 miles of carriage roads, several glacially formed ponds & lakes and a rich history dating back thousands of years.

Escape Texas Heat
Escape the heat of summer and cool off in the cooler climate of Maine!  Acadia National Park and it’s islands are constantly bathed by a cool ocean breeze.

The Great outdoors
There are loads of hiking and bicycle trails along the coastline. Horseback riding and kayaking are also available, or just take a gently stroll, breathe in the sweet air and beauty.

The Water
You can take sailboats between the different islands or explore the coastline by kayak.  If lucky, you can spot harbor seals, porpoises, bald eagles, osprey and other wildlife. It’s not all jagged cliffs along the coastline, but there are also beaches that are popular summertime spots for the locals and tourists alike to swim.

Seafood
Maine’s culture is known for its delicious seafood and famous lobster; a must eat if you want the full Maine experience.

Surrounding Towns
There are many small and wonderful places to visit surrounding the Park.  Rockland Harbor and the historic Breakwater lighthouse are just south of the park. Rockland Maine is halfway between Freeport and Bar Harbor, making it a great stop for a meal or a meandering long day through the downtown shops. The Maine ferry ports are right in the center of town, opening the islands for exploration too.

Transportation while in Bal Harbor:
Relax and enjoy a fare-free ride on the Island Explorer shuttle, which provides service between park destinations, local communities, and Bar Harbor-Hancock County Regional Airport. The fare-free Island Explorer features bus routes linking hotels, inns, and campgrounds with destinations in Acadia National Park and neighboring village centers. Clean propane-powered vehicles offer Mount Desert Island visitors and residents free transportation to hiking trails, carriage roads, island beaches, and in-town shops and restaurants. Free service begins June 23rd.
